Is it ironic to use abuse the pronoun ‘they’ by misusing it in a singular context within a pedantic post about misuse of ‘ironic’?

In all seriousness, though, irony requires considering individual context. Which means that what may be ironic for one person may not seem ironic to another.

For example if you were to find out that a friend of yours cut off her hair to buy a watch-chain for her husband only to find that her husband had sold his watch, you would probably find that unfortunate but not ironic. But with the additional information that he sold his watch to purchase her a lovely pin for her hair, it becomes clear that ‘The Gift Of The Magi’ is ironic.

Likewise, it’s quite possible that ‘rain on your wedding day’ /is/ ironic. We just don’t have enough information to know for sure.
