I went out for a brief happy hour this evening and saw my friend Sara for the first time in a few months. I was telling her a story wherein I used the phrase,
“They enjoyed a brief dalliance.”
She laughed out loud and said,
“I have never actually heard anyone use that word in a sentence. You are my vocabulary friend!”
It did occur to me how often these words I use that people are unfamiliar with are in some way related to sex, or at least debauchery. And I will admit to my deep fondness for talking about sordid things using the most high flown language possible. Not that I ever hesitate to use crass terminology if the ocasion suits, but I find my willingness to be completely explicit in terms that make it sound as though I am discussing a profound matter of deep philosophical importance totally satisfying and tremendously amusing.
